We make pre-surgery assessments the best experience possible
Pre-surgery assessments are highly recommended for medically compromised patients who are scheduled for major surgery or cancer treatment, e.g. radiation or chemotherapy. It ensures that the risk of oral complications in the middle of, or post-treatment is minimised.
What is pre-surgery assessment?
You might be referred by your medical doctor to see a dental specialist for a pre-surgery dental assessment. This is frequently done before you start any major surgery or cancer treatment.
This important step is to ensure that your oral health (teeth and jaw) is in a good condition. During major surgeries, a breathing tube will be placed down your throat. Therefore, a dental assessment will check if any teeth will be damaged when the tube is inserted, and whether your jaw can be opened for the entire surgery. Our dental specialist will also ensure that there are no active caries or gum problems that may cause an infection for those with compromised immune system.
What can you expect during the assessment?
Our dental specialists/ dentists will find out the details of your medical and dental history, and review your dental x-ray.
Our dental specialists/ dentists will conduct a physical examination of your dentition, jaw and mouth, and will discuss (if required) treatment options and timelines in conjunction with the schedule of upcoming major surgery or cancer treatment. The entire consultation should take less than an hour.
Depending on the results of the examination and x-rays at your dental assessment, our dental specialists/ dentists may clear you to proceed with your scheduled medical procedure or treatment.
On the other hand, if dental treatment is required, we will do our best to ensure that your dental treatment is completed in a timely manner.
If there are no pre-existing dental conditions that need to be addressed before the major surgery or cancer treatment, the follow up is done after medical treatment is completed.
Good oral hygiene – flossing, brushing and regular dental check-ups are encouraged.
