Q: What does an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon do?
A: Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons are fully trained in using surgical methods to correct diseases, injuries and defects in the oral and maxillofacial areas. Maxillofacial refers to the area that the facial skeleton covers, including forehead, cheekbone, face, jaws and soft tissues. They are skilled in the removal of teeth, jaw surgery, correcting birth defects (eg. cleft lip), facial reconstruction, dental implants, removal of benign tumors or cysts and oral cancer biopsies.

Q: What does an Orthodontist do?
A: Orthodontists are the recognised experts in diagnosing and treating teeth and jaw alignment issues. They are fully trained in the area of using orthodontic procedures such as braces or Invisalign® to solve problems such as improperly aligned teeth, crowded or unevenly spaced teeth, protruding teeth, extra or missing teeth, misaligned jaws and bite problems.
Q: Why is an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon and an Orthodontist giving a talk together?
A: Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and Orthodontists work closely together on numerous occasions to solve complex dental cases. The audience would gain insights to how we work seamlessly to ensure excellent patient experience and treatment outcome. Some of the cases we would be discussing include buried teeth which has insufficient space to grow out, extra teeth and one of the most common dental surgery, wisdom teeth surgery.
