This Week’s Feature
In the following weeks, we would be sharing more information related to the topics presented at the seminar.
This week’s focus is “Co-Managing Dental & Medical Problems”.
(R – L: A/Prof Ansgar Cheng, Prosthodontist, and Dr Daniel Wai, Endocrionologist)
Q: What is a Prosthodontist?
A: The term “prostho” means replacement and “dontist” means dealing with teeth. Prosthodontists are the recognised experts in the areas of replacing anything that is missing in your mouth. They are fully trained in the areas of dental restorations, missing teeth replacement including dental implants, crowns & bridges, cosmetic dentistry, and rehabilitation of head & neck cancer patients. Being the “architect” of a dental treatment plan, they regularly collaborate with other dental or health professionals to address patients’ dental concerns.
Q: What is an Endocrinologist?
A: Endocrinologists are medical specialists trained in diagnosing diseases related to the glands. These diseases often affect other parts of the body as well. As the glands in a person’s body release hormones, Endocrinologists regularly treat people who suffer from hormonal imbalances to restore it to normal levels.
Q: Why is a Prosthodontist and an Endocrinologist doing the talk together?
A: We would be discussing on how you can have better overall health when you have good dental health. For instance, did you know that having gum disease is linked to other serious conditions such as cardiovascular disease (heart disease/stroke), diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, cancers, respiratory diseases and kidney disease? Through this talk, you would find out more about why dental issues can affect your overall health and how you can prevent these dental issues.
