Researchers in Japan did a study among 600 senior citizens who are 70 years old and concluded that their “study suggests that retaining more teeth might be a useful indicator for longevity of older people.” This means that people who have more teeth may have a higher chance of living longer.
You would not become immortal even if you have a full set of teeth when you are old, but if having more teeth gives you a higher probability of having more time with your friends, family and loved ones, why not give it a shot?
Here are a few tips for you to have long lasting teeth:
- Make your appointments with your dentist a routine every six months
- Ensure your dentist is doing a complete periodontal (gum) evaluation at least once a year
- Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush, for at least two minutes each
- Floss once a day
- Do not share your toothbrush with anyone
- Use a toothpaste with fluoride
- Visit your dentist if you persistently grind your teeth at night
- Ensure that you meet your daily requirements for calcium and vitamin C
- Reduce your sugar intake
- Quit smoking
Parents are also encouraged to start tooth loss prevention for kids while they are young using these methods:
- Clean your baby’s gums with a clean, damp cloth after every feeding (this also means not to put your child to bed with a bottle of milk)
- Brush together with your child to inculcate good brushing habits
- Bring your child to a Paedodontist for a routine dental checkups every six months
