Question: Is mouthwash really safe?
Answer: With all the reports linking mouthwash with an increased risk of oral cancer, you might be wondering whether you should ditch your dental gargle. According to Dr Daylene Leong, a dental surgeon with Specialist Dental Group, it’s generally okay to use mouthwash.
However, some people may experience side effects such as a burning sensation in the cheeks, teeth staining and mouth ulcers (in rare cases). Just to be safe, pick alcohol-free rinses as they are gentler.
Dr Leong suggests pursing lips and parting teeth lightly, then swishing the solution inside the mouth for at least 30 seconds before spitting it out. Avoid eating for 30 minutes afterwards.
