Charcoal toothpaste has gained popularity in recent years, largely due to its perceived natural ingredients and promises of a brighter, whiter smile. The idea of using activated charcoal to remove stains appeals to those looking for more natural alternatives to traditional whitening products. But is it safe for your teeth?

What is charcoal toothpaste?
It is made with activated charcoal, a form of charcoal processed to increase its porosity. The powder is activated through oxidation at high temperatures. It is available as a supplement, powder, and additive in various foods and household products. It is promoted as an ingredient that binds to stains and plaque on the surface of the teeth, helping to scrub them off to create a whiter set of teeth. However, the American Dental Association (ADA) has concluded that there is insufficient evidence to support the safety and effectiveness of activated charcoal in dental products.
According to Dr Matthew Messina, a clinical director and assistant professor at Ohio State University College of Dentistry, charcoal toothpaste is extremely abrasive as it attempts to whiten your teeth by essentially sanding away the outer enamel.
Risks of using charcoal toothpaste
While the whitening benefits of charcoal toothpaste are often promoted, there are significant risks associated with its use:
- Abrasiveness: It is too abrasive for daily use. While it removes stains, it can also wear down your tooth enamel, leading to sensitivity and a higher risk of cavities. Remember, once your tooth enamel is eroded, it cannot be regenerated.
- No fluoride protection: Most do not contain fluoride, a key ingredient in preventing cavities and strengthening enamel.
- Potential gum irritation: The abrasive nature of it can irritate your gums, especially with aggressive brushing, potentially causing inflammation, bleeding, and even gum recession.
- Staining of dental restorations: It can stain dental restorations like crowns, veneers, or fillings, making them appear darker over time.
Should you use charcoal toothpaste?
It’s important to understand that daily use can lead to enamel damage, gum irritation, and other oral health problems. There are safer alternatives, such as:
- Professional whitening treatment: Speak to your dentist about professional teeth whitening options that are both safe and effective.
- Regular dental cleanings: Regular check-ups and cleanings with your dentist twice a year can help keep your teeth clean without the risk of enamel damage.
While charcoal toothpaste may offer short-term cosmetic benefits, it comes with significant risks that may compromise your long-term dental health. Always consult your dentist before introducing any new product into your oral care routine, especially those with abrasive ingredients like charcoal.
