Dentist Blog: Ultra Marathon

Specialist Dental Group has launched an on-going series of blog posts by our individual dental specialists. All views provided are the dentist’s own opinions and are posted on this blog as part of our on-going efforts to educate the public about dental issues and other matters of interest relating to dentistry and healthcare.
As we are in the line of healthcare service, we are all supportive of a healthy lifestyle. I would say many of our team members engage in some form of sports on a regular basis.
The Olympic motto is: ‘Higher, Stronger, Faster’. Running is naturally the simplest form of sport to achieve the motto.
Some members of our clinical team (any guesses? No, it isn’t me!) have successfully finished a 42.195km full marathon. An impressive feat in itself.
On June 20, 2011, I received an email from one of my high school classmates, KC Chui saying that he will be visiting Singapore for a few days. When I asked him what was the purpose of his trip, he quietly told me: ‘I am supposed to do some hard work in Singapore’. It was after some ‘pressing’ from me that he said he was supposed to do the 100km Sundown Ultramarathon on the evening of June 25, 2011.
When I met up with him after work on June 24, after a good 28 years, I found I was seeing in him the same energetic, highly intelligent, well-read and down to earth St. Louis School boy from 179 Third Street, Hong Kong. This accountant turned marathon runner is by far a far superior product from my high school. His kindness and humility was clearly demonstrated in his deeds.
After a little bit of chit-chat, the seasoned distance runner kindly volunteered to represent Specialist Dental Group to participate in the 100km Ultramarathon. When I mentioned this online, little did he and I know that within a few hours, tons of support from our alumnus would show up from all over the world.
Even though the 100km Ultramarathon was a very long event in the middle of the night of a tropical metropolitan city, he was not lonely in that journey, the Spirit of St. Louis was with him all the way. Without a doubt, we were honoured to be associated with such great company.

Same level of energy, after 28 years, itself is a great achievement regardless of the ultramarathon result !

We agree, Karl… he is amazing !! Anyone that dares to enter such an event deserves great respect. We are sure they must have put in many hundreds of kilometres before the big day

It is the preparation that counts.

We certainly agree with you… being able to contemplate doing the ultra-marathon, let alone completing it is a super achievement.
our team of 16 staff are doing a 5km run this weekend and already it is a challenge for us !! however, we look at this as a bonding opportunity and a chance to also get fit….

Oh that’s nice! Having that energy in that age is a great accomplishment in that marathon. You are a good example. Thank you for sharing this to us.
